Parking Czar Donald Shoup Files Petition to Remove Free Parking Space from Monopoly

LOS ANGELES, CA In his never-ending crusade to end free parking in America, Donald Shoup, AICP, recently submitted a petition to remove the “Free Parking” space from the classic Monopoly board game. “Our children are systematically brainwashed from an early age that parking should be free. Not to mention that many families have house rules where whoever lands on the free parking space receives the fees and taxes paid from players during the game. Imagine the ludicrousness of that, instead of having to pay for parking, we are teaching our youth that you should get paid for parking in a free parking space. I find it contemptable and ridiculous to be perfectly honest with you.” The petition which can be found at change.org quickly went viral with over 6,000 petition signers at press time due to Dr. Shoup’s large online fanbase known as Shoupistas. The petition is gaining so much steam that even Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner felt the need to comment on his Twitter page, “We at Hasbro have always been unwavering in our commitment to our purpose which is to make the world a better place for children and their families. While we understand the position of Donald Shoup and the parking community, we must remember at the end of the day it is just a board game meant for children to have fun.” Shoup has recommended changing the Free Parking space to be named Paid Parking and if a player lands on the space, they must pay a fee that goes towards neighboring players houses, hotels and railroads.
